I spent a decade funding my family

My mother called the next morning.

I let it ring.

She called again.

Then again.

By the fifth call, I silenced my phone and made coffee.

Messages began appearing.

Sophia, I can’t believe you did this.

Do you have any idea how much the house is struggling?

Don’t be selfish.

Family is supposed to help each other.

Call me back.

I read them twice.

Not one message said, I’m sorry.

Not one asked whether I was okay.

Not one acknowledged the dinner.

The issue, apparently, was not that they had hurt me.

The issue was that the money had stopped.

A voicemail from my father arrived later that morning.

“Sophia, you need to reconsider. Your mother is very upset. You can’t cut ties over a misunderstanding. We’re family.”

I listened to it once and deleted it.

By the afternoon, Olivia started texting.

Absolutely pathetic, Sophia.

You’re so petty.

If you didn’t want to help, you should have said so instead of pretending to be the good one.

You’ve destroyed this family. Congratulations.

I almost laughed at the last message.

All I had done was stop paying.

If that was enough to “destroy” the family, then money had been holding more of it together than anyone wanted to admit.

Then Parker called.

I answered.

“What?” I said.

He did not bother with hello.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

“Taking back what’s mine.”

“You cut off Mom and Dad because you didn’t get an inheritance.”

“This isn’t about the inheritance.”

“Of course it is.”

“It’s about respect, Parker.”

He scoffed.

“You’re unbelievable.”

“No. What’s unbelievable is that you all think I should keep financing people who just told me I don’t matter enough to be treated fairly.”

“You’re abandoning the family.”

“I’m stopping voluntary payments.”

His voice hardened.

“You think you can do this without consequences?”

I went very still.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Just wait.”

He hung up.

I stared at the screen after the call ended.

In another family, maybe I would have dismissed it as an angry remark. With Parker, I was not sure.

I opened my contacts.

Mom.

Dad.

Olivia.

Parker.
