This house belongs to Celeste.
That was all.
He could have protected the truth.
He could have protected me.
Instead, he protected himself.
“Celeste, not now.”
Then he agreed with his mother.
When I said okay, Marcus assumed I had surrendered.
What I had actually done was stop protecting him.
I slept badly that night.
Marcus tried to talk twice.
The first time, he said Vivien had become excited because of the baby.
The second time, he said nobody had actually forced us to do anything.
I listened from my side of the bed.
“Did you mean what you said?”
“What part?”
“That we should leave.”
He was quiet.
“I think downsizing temporarily could help Malcolm.”
“Did you mean it?”
“I just answered you.”
“No, Marcus. You explained it. I asked whether you meant it.”
He sat up.
“Yes.”
That was all I needed.
Monday morning, I called an attorney before I called a mover.
Her name was Rebecca Shaw.
She asked me four questions.
“Whose name is on the deed?”
“Mine.”
“Mortgage?”
“Mine.”
“Was the house purchased before the marriage?”
“Yes.”
“Prenup?”
“Yes.”
She asked me to send everything.
Then she gave me instructions that were almost disappointingly practical.
Do not change the locks.
Do not remove Marcus’s personal property.
Do not remove items that could reasonably be disputed as marital property without documenting them.
Photograph every room.
Make an inventory.
Preserve financial records.
Communicate in writing whenever possible.
I had no interest in turning my life into a dramatic legal mess just to make a point.
So I did exactly what she said.
I photographed the living room from every angle.
Then the dining room.
Bedroom.
Office.
Patio.
Garage.
I pulled copies of the deed from my safe.
Mortgage statements.
Homeowner’s insurance records.
The property schedule attached to our prenup.
Purchase receipts for furniture I owned before the marriage.
By noon, I had a digital folder containing everything.
Then I booked a furnished executive apartment for two months.
Not luxurious.
Clean.
Quiet.
Enough distance for me to make decisions without Marcus explaining them while I was making them.
I rented a climate-controlled storage unit.
By Monday afternoon, movers were scheduled for six-thirty Tuesday morning.
Only then did I text Marcus.
I am moving out temporarily. Our marriage is over. My attorney will contact you regarding the house.
He called immediately.
I watched the screen until it stopped.
Then he called again.
And again.
I did not answer.
