My parents left my daughter with a cruel note

This was more than revenge.

This was justice.

I led them into the kitchen.

My parents’ eyes immediately landed on the table. I watched as their faces shifted from smuggness to confusion and then finally to horror.

There, neatly laid out, was everything they would need to understand the consequences of their cruelty.

A series of photographs, carefully staged, carefully taken, showed every corner of their empty house during their absence.

Broken dishes, food left out, little notes I had left for Sophia to record the days they abandoned her.

And in the center, the piece de resistance, a small wrapped box addressed to them with elegant handwriting.

My mother picked it up first.

“What is this?” she asked, her voice trembling for the first time in decades.

My father leaned over her shoulder, frowning.

Veronica’s laughter faltered, curiosity battling pride.

I smiled, the kind of smile that hides storms.

“Open it,” I said softly, as if I were inviting them to their doom over tea.

They did cautiously, as if expecting some innocent Christmas trinket.

Inside the box was a single item, a voice recorder.

I pressed play.

The sound of Sophia’s voice filled the kitchen.

“We waited. They left me alone. Mommy said they don’t love me, but I’m safe now. I’m happy with mommy, and they will learn what it means to hurt someone we love.”

The room went silent.

My father’s hand shook as he dropped the box. My mother’s lips quivered.

Veronica’s eyes widened, her laughter dying in her throat.
