My stepfamily said I’d never be one of them

Denise texted, “This is really immature. You’re making a point. We get it. You can stop now.”

I didn’t answer. Not yet. I wasn’t ready to speak.

Instead, I did something else. I called the contractor who had helped me install the backup generator last year. It wasn’t cheap. almost $5,000, but I put it on my credit card and paid it off over time.

They’d never even offered to pitch in, even after the blackout last December when the whole neighborhood lost power and their house stayed fully lit. I still remember the thank you I never got.

I told the contractor I was moving homes and needed the unit relocated.

No problem, he said. He could have someone out by Friday.

They were still texting when the electrician showed up. Ryan tried to stop him at the door.

“You can’t just take that. This is our house.”

But the paperwork, it was clear. Purchase receipt in my name. Installation contract under my billing address.

Ryan stood in the driveway shouting at a man holding a clipboard while the generator was carefully disconnected and loaded onto a truck. That image, him flailing like a toddler denied a toy, was a little gift from the universe.

That night, I finally answered. Just one message sent to the group chat at 11:47 p.m.

Don’t worry, I’m just doing what you all taught me, taking care of what’s mine.

I muted the chat after that, but the fallout wasn’t over.

A week passed. I focused on work. I bought new furniture, updated my space, finally got that espresso machine I’ve been eyeing.

Life felt quieter, lighter.

But then something strange happened. My dad called.

I stared at the screen, unsure what to do. He never called. He let Denise or Ellie handle the family communications.

Still, I answered out of curiosity more than anything.
