Underneath it sat Jason’s gaming chair.
Two monitors.
A mattress shoved against one wall.
Olivia’s clothes had been dumped into plastic bags.
The changing table was covered with computer equipment.
Jason sat wearing headphones and eating pizza.
He glanced over.
“Oh. You’re back.”
Daniel went red.
“Where is the crib?”
Jason pulled one headphone off.
“Relax. Mom said I could stay.”
“This is my daughter’s room.”
Jason looked at Olivia.
“She’s a baby.”
He actually shrugged.
“She doesn’t even know what a room is.”
Daniel stepped toward him.
I put one hand on my husband’s arm.
“Don’t.”
He turned toward me.
I looked at the room.
Then at Jason.
I did not cry.
I took out my phone.
Made one call.
“Hello. It’s Hannah Mitchell.”
Jason barely looked away from his monitor.
“I need you to come to my house.”
I paused.
“Yes. Right now.”
Then:
“Please bring the documents we discussed.”
Jason finally turned around.
“Who are you calling?”
I ended the call.
“The police?”
“No.”
I held Olivia closer.
“Someone you should have expected.”
