Mom appeared in the hallway carrying a laundry basket.
“Hannah, don’t start.”
I stared at her.
“You removed my baby’s crib.”
“It’s in the garage.”
“You entered my house without permission.”
“I’m your mother.”
She rolled her eyes.
“Honestly, you’re acting like we did something terrible. Jason is family.”
I looked down at Olivia.
Then back at her.
“So is she.”
Mom had no answer.
Twenty minutes later, someone knocked at the front door.
Jason pulled off both headphones.
“Who is that?”
I opened the door.
Mr. Collins, our attorney, stood outside holding a folder.
Beside him was a uniformed police officer.
Jason went pale.
Because this was not the first time he had seen Mr. Collins.

Three months earlier, Jason had already been involved in a dispute serious enough for us to bring in an attorney.
My parents had lent him money.
Daniel and I had also helped him purchase a vehicle when his old one died.
Later, we learned Jason had tried to sell that vehicle without resolving the ownership issue first.
Mr. Collins had sent him a formal notice.
So when Jason saw him standing at my front door again, he immediately understood that this was not another family argument Mom could smooth over.
Mr. Collins stepped inside.
“Mrs. Mitchell.”
Then he looked down the crowded hallway.
“I understand someone is occupying your property without your consent.”
“Yes.”
Mom hurried forward.
“This is a family misunderstanding.”
Mr. Collins remained calm.
“Then it should be relatively easy to resolve.”
Jason stood.
“Mom said I could stay here.”
My mother turned toward him.
